What is required to be eligible for belt exam?
Consistent Attendance; 12 classes are required for white to yellow belt and increases to 18 classes for each belt there after

Good Effort; consistently always doing their best

Good Attitude; consistently on time for class, in full uniform with proper gear when required, being respectful of fellow students and teachers as well as following the rules of the Academy posted on the mezzanine and the “Mat Agreements” posted at the bottom of the stairs.

Two Black Progress Stripes; we conduct progress reviews during the 4th and 8th week of each session where 1/3 of the curriculum is reviewed. If successful each student receives a black stripe on their belt. The 3rd stripe is awarded for successfully passing their belt exam and will be promoted on promotion day.

We believe that the final say whether a student is promoted or not is the Parent's so we work very hard to communicate any concerns we may have regarding a student's promotion. We ask all parents for the same communication. If you are concerned or do not want your child to be promoted please email  sifu@greatwayma.ca or sifutom@greatwayma.ca as soon as possible. They will contact you to discuss a plan of action.

What is required to pass a belt exam?
Skill level - we base skill level on the 6 qualities of a Champion; Focus, Accuracy, Speed, Power, Intensity & Excellence
We conduct belt exams the 12th week of each session and require students to attend 2 classes during that week to complete the exam.
If you cannot attend 2 classes during exam week you may need to schedule a make up exam

What is the colored stripe for?
Colored stripes on a belt indicate that a student has completed their "Kung Fu Quest" card. Each session we handout Kung Fu Quest cards monthly to promote home practice as well as character development themes such as; home chores/teamwork, good manners & random acts of kindness.

What if you miss a progress review?
If you miss the 1st progress review week you can make it up during the 2nd progress review week
If you miss the 2nd you may need to schedule a private lesson

What if my child is not eligible to test or does not pass their exam?
Not all students are eligible to test or pass their exam and for various reasons such as attendance, scheduling, effort, attitude or skill level and that is why we schedule make up exams 2 to 4 weeks after Belt Promotion Day

What if I do not want my child to receive a progress stripe or do a belt exam?
Behavior and performance in school, at home as well as at Kung Fu determine whether or not a student receives a progress stripe or promoted to their next rank. Therefore the final "say” is in the hands of the parents
If your child is not meeting these qualifications either at home or at school we will hold that student’s promotion at your request until there has been satisfactory improvement. If they are not meeting the qualifications here at Great Way we will contact you before exam and promotion week to discuss a course of action

What is Promotion Day?
Our quarterly belt exam week is followed by a Saturday promotion day presenting each student who successfully passed their belt exam with their new belt while their families and fellow students cheer them on. Click here for our Promotion Day schedule

Do we have to change class days or times after promotion day?
Your child may need to change class days and times when they successfully pass their yellow belt and brown belt exams
Our main objective at Great Way Martial Arts is to develop well – rounded students, not only at our studio, but in society as well. That’s why our school teaches the qualities of black belt Excellence

Black Belt Qualities; Focus/Self-Control/Self-Discipline/Perseverance/Honesty/Leadership/Positive Attitude/Respect

Not only do students become black belts in martial arts, but they strive to become academic black belts and eventually, corporate black belts or black belt employees. We use “black belt” as a metaphor for personal Excellence
